USED BOOK DRIVE (July 7-18, 2008)
Living in Hong Kong , your children enjoy the benefits of good education in a safe environment. They have qualified teachers, textbooks, computers and even air-conditioning during the hot summer days! However, just a little north of us, in Deqing, in Guangzhou , children do not have the advantages your children have. It is for this reason that we write to you today.
The Care for Learning and Community (CLC)* is a scholarship program founded in 2007 by three students at the Hong Kong International School . Only in its 2nd year, CLC has already helped over 150 girls to continue their education at Xiang Shan High School . These girls have successfully completed their middle school education at government schools with top grades but are too poor to continue studying in high school. All of them have been highly recommended by their middle school teachers as talented and hard working students. Deprived of the means to attend high school, these girls would have had to work on their family’s farms or in factories in Shenzhen, limiting any chances of improving their future. We believe these girls deserve an opportunity to break away from the “cycle of poverty” they are trapped in. CLC has also started a summer program to help these girls with their communication and leadership skills.
Our aim today is to acquire books that we will deliver to these students ourselves. We sincerely ask for your help in donating unwanted books, especially reference books and novels suitable for middle school/high school readers (however books that promote political thought or luxury ideas are not recommended.)
Books received will be directly delivered during our trip to conduct their summer program on July 12, 2008. We hope you can donate books to us before then, however any books received after that will be kept and delivered to the girls next year. Alternatively, you can donate money in order for us to buy books for their benefit. If you wish to donate money, please make a cheque payable to “Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation” (see below.) Please write “ Xiang Shan High School-Book Drive ” on the back of your cheque. Any amount would be appreciated.
